CHOOSING THE RIGHT FILM
We check glass type, frame condition and exposure before specifying anything. The wrong film on the wrong glass can create thermal stress or affect a glazing warranty, so this isn't a step to skip.
THICKNESS
Safety and security films range from around 4 mil up to 14 mil and beyond. Thicker film resists more impact but is harder to install cleanly and costs more. Light-duty glass fragment retention and a hardened school entry door are not the same specification, and shouldn't be quoted as if they were.
CLEAR OR COMBINED
Most security film is optically clear. Combination films add solar heat rejection, which makes sense on a west-facing elevation where you'd otherwise be doing two jobs.
INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR
Interior application is standard and lasts longer. Exterior application is used where the inside surface can't be worked on or the glazing can't be accessed with a shorter service life because it takes the weather directly.
ATTACHMENT
Whether the opening needs an anchoring system is the single biggest variable in what a project costs, and the one most often left off a competing bid.

Security film holds the glass together. But an unanchored filmed pane can still be pushed out of its frame in one piece. The glass breaks, the film holds it together, and the whole assembly gets shoved through the opening. The film performed exactly as designed and the opening still failed.

Wet glazing bonds the filmed glass to the frame itself with a structural sealant bead, so the pane stays anchored under sustained impact. Most institutional specifications call for attachment on primary entries. It's also the line item that disappears from cut-rate bids, which is why two quotes for "security film" can differ a lot in price and perform very differently in an incident.
